On Jan. 8, 2002, President Bush signed into law the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA), also known as the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 (NCLB). This act was developed around four basic education reform principles: stronger accountability for results, increased flexibility and local control, expanded options for parents, and an emphasis on teaching methods that have been proven to work. For more information on the No Child Left Behind Act and its impact on the Avery School District, please visit NCLB Act web site. To comply with the “No Child Left Behind Act of 2001” the state of Idaho has created Idaho State Achievement Standards and a new state assessment system called the Idaho Standards Achievement Test. The Idaho State Achievement Standards outline what every child should know and be able to do in specific subjects. Instruction in every school in the state will be based on the same curriculum standards. Standards help teachers know what is to be taught and help children and parents know what is to be learned. Avery and Calder staff have been striving to design and implement instruction based on the Idaho State Achievement Standards. This year, we are in the process of developing a comprehensive Language Arts, Reading, Math, and Social Studies curriculum to improve student achievement and competency. All K-12 students are required to participate in the Idaho State Board of Education assessment program. Assessments include the Idaho Reading Indicator, Direct Writing Assessment, Direct Math Assessment, and the Idaho Standards Achievement Test (ISAT). All are written assessments with the exception of the ISAT which is taken on the computer. The results help teachers, parents, and students determine student achievement and proficiency on the Idaho State Standards. For
